Washington, DC - Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (D-MD) will be in New Jersey this weekend stumping for Democratic House candidates.
On Saturday, Hoyer will join incumbent freshman Rep. Josh Gottheimer (NJ-05) in Hackensack for a campaign event before both Members attend a rally to end gun violence at the Bergen County Courthouse. Rep. Gottheimer, a former presidential speechwriter and successful Microsoft executive, was elected to Congress in 2016 and is running for re-election. Hoyer will then join candidate Mikie Sherrill (NJ-11) in Morristown to participate in the March for Our Lives event with students marching for safer schools. Later in the day, he will join Sherrill for a campaign event. Previously having served as a Navy helicopter pilot and an Assistant U.S. Attorney, Sherrill is running for the open seat being vacated by Republican Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen, who is retiring, in a Red-to-Blue designated race.
Hoyer will be in Westfield on Sunday morning to attend a campaign event in support of candidate Tom Malinowski (NJ-07). Malinowski, a former President of Human Rights Watch and Assistant Secretary of State in the Obama Administration, is challenging Republican Rep. Leonard Lance. Afterward, Hoyer will travel to Marlton for an event in support of candidate Andy Kim (NJ-03). A former member of the National Security Council who served as a strategic advisor to Generals David Petraeus and George Allen in Afghanistan, Kim is challenging two-term Republican Rep. Tom MacArthur in a Red-to-Blue designated race.
This will be Hoyer's twenty-first trip this election cycle in support of Democratic candidates, and since the cycle began he has raised or contributed $3.2 million to support House Democratic campaigns.
